Perhaps Sayidan's village would not be as famous as it is today if it weren't for Shaggydog. The song 'Di Sayidan', which was composed by young people who hang out every night in the village alley in the Gondomanan area, has been very popular since its initial release until now. Since its inception 23 years ago on June 1, 1997 to be precise, the band Shaggydog has never been out of date and has strengthened Yogyakarta as one of the axis of music growth in Indonesia.
The band, which consists of Heru, Richard, Raymond, Bandizt, Lilik and Yoyo', agreed to call the music they play “Doggy Style”, which is a combination of several musical elements such as ska, reggae, jazz, swing and rock. Shaggydog was influenced by bands such as the Cherry Poppin Daddies, Hepcat, Bob Marley, and the Song Beach Dub Allstars.
The band that carries the SKA stream is one of the senior bands that is still solid and exists today. Shaggydog has now released six albums throughout his discography. The band's journey began when they were in high school. The young people of Sayidan village, who often get together and hang out together in the narrow alleys near the Code River, finally decided to form a band. "At that time, Raymond asked me to perform, and it was our first time to perform in their own village, Sayidan," said Heru, vocalist of Shaggydog. Starting in 1998, Shaggydog decided to pursue SKA music after previously being attracted to SKA elements in the bands Rancid and NOFX and several other bands. Heru also revealed that in 1998, after the existence of SKA music, he and his band had rejected about 5 major labels. "Because we know that in the end, if the trend goes down, we will throw it away," said Heru.
When the trend of Ska music experienced a decline, it also had an impact on Shaggydog. They admitted that they had not performed for a year. To make a living, they live together in a rented house and work as pandan craftsmen. "Until the turning point, on the third album, our lives turned around as if we immediately rose to the top," said Heru.
