In the collective memory of the people of Yogyakarta, the word Ginggang is very attached to herbal medicine. The existence of Jamu Jamu cannot be separated from the owners or pioneers who have made this herbal medicine sustainable until now. From the first generation of herbal medicine makers who were initially specifically for the Pura Pakualaman family, Ginggang now sells its products to the general public. Currently Rudy Supriyadi manages Jamu Ginggang.
Rudy Supriyadi, a friendly man, was born on November 21, 1963 in Yogyakarta, from a family that continues to preserve herbal medicine. Since childhood, he has been accustomed to and familiar with herbal medicine, both in the form of raw materials, measuring sizes, mixing and serving it.
Rudy Supriyadi is the 5th descendant of the first pioneer of Jamu Jamu. Rudy Supriyadi was born to Dasiyah (the 4th generation producer of Jamu Ginggang) and Sutiman Budidarmo. The couple was blessed with 7 sons and daughters. Rudy Supriyadi is child number 6 of 7 siblings. Of the 7 sons and daughters of Dasiyah and Sutiman Budidarma, only Rudy is engaged in and continues to make Jamu Jamu.
Rudy Supriyadi, who received formal education up to high school level, before deciding to continue the ancestral tradition of making herbal medicine, was once a batik entrepreneur (wood batik and batik cloth) in Bayat, which has a large workforce. Besides that, he also had a batik production house in the Bimo Kurdo area, Sapen, Yogyakarta. The world economic crisis and natural disasters caused his business to retreat. This factor made Rudy decide to change professions and pursue a field that had been managed by his parents for a long time, namely preserving the Ginggang herbal medicine business. Another important factor that contributed to Rudy's involvement in herbal medicine management was the age of his parents, who were already classified as elderly. Rudy Supriyadi then continued the business that had been started by his ancestors, namely managing Jamu Ginggang until now. Rudy Supriyadi currently lives at Kauman PA 11/30, RT 034, RW 009, Gunungketur Village, Pakualaman, Yogyakarta. Starting in 2000, Rudy Supriyadi focused on managing the Ginggang herbal business. Basically, this man who was born and raised in a family of Jamu Ginggang producers likes businesses related to culture and tradition.
In managing Jamu Ginggang, Rudy gets a lot of new insights and ideas from colleagues and customers. Several new products have been developed, including turmeric milk. These products have started to be made but are still limited and must be ordered in advance. The concept of having to be clean in managing herbal medicine is still being applied by Rudy until now. Clean in this case is the self-cleanliness of the makers, the materials used and the tools used. The concept was passed down from his parents.
His work in the herbal medicine field brought Rudy Supriyadi into the GP Jamu organization in Yogyakarta. He held the position of Deputy Chairman at GP Jamu Yogyakarta from 2005-20019. Within this organization many discussions were held about herbal medicine and that added insight and knowledge about herbal medicine.
Jamu Jawa Ginggang is located to the west of Pakualaman Temple, precisely at JI. Mosque No. 32 Pakualaman Yogyakarta. Jamu Jawa Ginggang products are still maintaining and developing product quality and originality. Herbal medicine that has become an icon and has been sought after by the community for a long time in Ginggang is Galian Putri, Healthy Men, Healthy Women, Sawan Taun. In addition, the products that are the mainstay of Ginggang are herbal drinks such as turmeric, tamarind and rice kencur. According to Rudy, Jamu Ginggang makes special concoctions for young women, adults and parents. Ginggang does not make herbal medicine for babies or children.
Jamu Jawa Ginggang consistently concocts herbal medicine using traditional recipes, which was prepared by its pioneer (mBah Djaya), a courtier of the Royal Physician of the Paku Alam Palace during the leadership of Sri Pakualam VI. Mbah Djaya's herbal medicine business was then continued by his son, Mbah Bilawa. The next descendant or generation is Mr. Puspomadyo. It was from Mr. Puspomadyo that Rudy Supriyadi got the herbal medicine recipe that had been written down (name of ingredients, size, method of preparation). Puspomadyo is Rudy's maternal grandfather.
The name Ginggang is a name suggested by Sri Pakualam VI. Originally named "Tan Ginggang" or (always ;ang/distance). The name is intended so that there are no more distances, even closer, closer, or always i. The name change from Tan Ginggang to Ginggang occurred during the 3rd generation, when it was managed by Puspomadyo around 11950. When it was managed by Bilowo (mBah Djaya's younger brother) his name was still Tan Ginggang.
The consumers/customers of Jamu Jawa Ginggang are very varied, starting from women (particularly daughters), youth, adults, to the elderly. The products offered by Jamu Jawa Ginggang include ready-to-drink liquid herbal medicine, powdered herbal medicine, and boiled herbal medicine. If one looks at its existence and existence, Jamu Jawa Ginggang has helped preserve the Javanese tradition in the field of traditional knowledge, which has been in process for almost a hundred years (according to Pak Rudy's statement, Jamu Ginggang will be 1 century old in four more years). The success in maintaining the quality and originality of traditional herbal medicine has added to the special features of Yogyakarta, and Jamu Ginggang has become one of the icons of the city of Yogyakarta.
The Government of the Republic of Indonesia has declared herbal medicine as an Indonesian brand in 2008. In 2019, herbal medicine has been designated as a national cultural heritage. Jamu has been present in this country for a long time. In the midst of the rise of modern medicines and healthy lifestyle trends, jamu is becoming increasingly popular. On the other hand, the practitioners who have knowledge about the skills of making jamu are decreasing. Among the practitioners/conservators of herbal medicine who continue to develop herbal medicine from Yogyakarta is Rudy Supriyadi. His commitment and dedication to the preservation of herbal medicine should be appreciated. """
