Painters or artists in general, emerge because of the encouragement of dreams, passionate interest, courage to face challenges and risks that are not simple, for the sake of fighting for dignity. Success is a fruit that should be harvested. This short introduction adequately represents the long journey of the artist Nasirun (born October 1, 1965, in Cilacap, Central Java) to where he is today. He completed his fine arts education at the SMSR Yogyakarta majoring in Craft Arts, then continued on to the Department of Painting, FSR ISI Yogyakarta. Nasirun's works remind us of the colors processed in Widayat's painting (who incidentally is his lecturer), the distorted figures in Hendra Gunawan's paintings, or the shapes, strokes, and colors in S. Sudjojono's paintings. The ideas, forms and colors of Nasirun's works are based on his understanding and appreciation of various beliefs, legends, mythologies and elements of traditional art, combined with ideas originating from everyday realities, including indirect 'influences' from those teachers. Nasirun mixes all of these into authentic personal expressions: paintings filled with ornamentation, processed colors, flexible deformed forms, and present a mysterious atmosphere. Not only using canvas as the main material, Nasirun explores various mediums for painting. It responds to any object; invitation letters, packaging, wood, tables, chairs, cans of crackers, and on one occasion Nasirun was asked to paint expensive branded bags and a number of luxury cars. He also presents paintings such as wayang kulit, the parts of which are given a stalk (cepurit; puppet handle made of bone) which are displayed by being plugged in. Nasirun's main principle of work is "painting", even on two-dimensional objects. In such a creative process, Nasirun's works can be read from the perspective of contemporary art. He breaks through the conventional understanding of painting, but within the framework of painting. For him, the various predicates are not important, or he doesn't even care about them. Even jokingly, when many people talk about the contemporary nature of his artwork, Nasirun admits lightly and as a joke, that "I am a contemporary convert". This acknowledgment shows that for him, he is not too concerned with the various titles, because what is more important is to maintain the enthusiasm to continue to do his best. Art journey winding and not easy. The difficult days at the beginning of his career as a painter did not make him recede and try to change direction. With all his faith, he continues to pursue his choice with all his passion. Nasirun arrived at the first solo exhibition at the Mirota Campus building, JI. Godean, Yogyakarta in 1993, which was promoted by entrepreneur Siswanto Hs, Main Director of the Mirota Group. Apparently the exhibition was an important milestone for Nasirun's painting career, because subsequent exhibitions continued to occur, both solo and invitations from various exhibition organizing institutions. In 1999, a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Indonesia entitled "Ojo Ngono", then at Nadi Gallery, at Galeri Salihara, and the exhibition "Salam Bekti" in 2009 which was dedicated to commemorating the 1000th anniversary of his mother's death; an exhibition of 1000 paintings at the Salihara Gallery, Jakarta; solo exhibition at Mizuma Gallery, Japan (2015), and various events in Asia, Europe and America. Joint exhibitions at innumerable important exhibitions, including the Bali Biennale Summit Event Exhibition (2005), Biennale Jogja IX: Neo-Nation (2007), Un[Real] at the National Gallery of Indonesia (2009), Commonsense at the National Gallery of Indonesia ( 2010), and dozens of other exhibitions both at home and abroad. "I never refuse if invited to participate in exhibitions anywhere," he said lightly while chuckling, like his signature laugh. A number of awards Mc Donald Award, and Phillip Moris Indonesia Art Awards (1997). Nasirun was also chosen by the Ministry of Education and Culture to be involved in the Maestro Together Study program, a workshop-like program with a number of selected students, to work while learning various things related to the creative process of art with Nasirun. Nasirun has also provided a house to store his collections, call it a kind of art museum, located in front of his residence in the Bayeman area, Jalan Wates, Yogyakarta. The works of artists that he got were not because he was looking for them, but the works reached him to be "collected". Some are delivered by intermediaries, but not infrequently the painters themselves come for the purpose of "to be collected". Looking at the collected collections, you can see important works that are not owned by other collectors, including government museums such as the National Gallery of Indonesia. For example, a number of paintings by Emiria Soenasa, works by A.J. Katamsi (the first director of ASRI Yogyakarta), Danarto's works include old works by Indonesian fine art maestros. Like the meaning of his name Nasirun -told, the name is taken from the word An-Nasr, one of the letters in the Koran, which means "help" - so he said, "my destiny must be ready to help", this time conveyed with a serious expression. Nasirun believes that by collecting these works, the basic meaning is actually sharing with other people (artists). ***
