Hani was born in Yogyakarta on September 26, 1945 and has a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from UGM. Since the 1960s, Hani has been involved in helping his parents and has played a big role in preserving traditional Batik-making at the Winotosastro Batik craft center. Even since the 1970s, Hani has helped in the production department to preserve Batik with classic motifs and the traditional manufacturing process. Besides being known for its classic motifs, Winotosastro Batik has a particularity with the use of natural dyes.
When Batik craft industries began to switch to chemical dyes as an alternative to Batik coloring, most Winotosatro Batik crafts continued to use natural dyes from plants. Hani's desire to maintain the tradition of making Batik with natural materials has been carried out since he was young. Various experiments were carried out by planting plants that can be used as Batik dyes, such as indigo/tarum/indigo (indigofera), soga tingi (Ceriops Candolleana Arn), soga jambal (Pelthophorum Ferruginum), hardwood (Cudraina Javanensis), putri mats (Mimosa pudica ), noni (Morinda Citrrifelia), guava (Psidium Guajova), mango (Mangifero Indica L.), secang (Caesalpinia Sappan), jackfruit (Artocarpus Heterophyllus), turmeric (Curcuma), kesumba (Bixa Orela), and so on.
Hani also gave indigo plant seeds to a number of farmers in the Yogyakarta area to plant. When the leaves are picked, Hani will buy them to be made into a paste and used by Winotosastro Batik Crafts as a blue dye. Hani's step in maintaining this natural dye is a preservation of a tradition that is currently relatively rarely carried out by Batik entrepreneurs.
After his parents died, Hani, who currently resides at Jalan Tirtodipuran No.34, is the owner and leader of Winotosastro Batik Crafts who is quite consistent in maintaining traditional Batik-making with natural materials. In various seminars and workshops held both in Indonesia and abroad on the making of Batik, Hani always prioritizes making traditional Batik with natural dyes, whether as a participant, speaker or resource person. His Batik Showroom is a place to learn the process of making Batik from start to finish. Hani has high hopes especially for the younger generation who witness the traditional making of Batik in the Batik showroom to appreciate Batik as ancestral heritage that must be preserved.
Hani participates in promoting Indonesian Batik by participating in trade exhibitions in Europe, the United States, Canada, Asia, Africa and China, both coordinated by the government, companies and sponsors, such as the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), European Economic Community (EEC), and The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).
In this seat, Hani is active as an administrator at the Sekar Jagad Association of Indonesian Batik Lovers, the Yogyakarta City Regional National Crafts Council (Dekanasda), as well as various activities related to Batik crafts. Hash continues, preserves, and develops Batik as one of the world's cultural heritages, especially Batik with traditional Jogja motifs."'
