Hanung Bramantyo

The development of Indonesian films cannot be separated from the name Hanung Bramantyo, born in Yogyakarta, October 1, 1975, known as a young director with a number of outstanding works. The husband of artist Zaskia Adya Mecca has produced many phenomenal films and is discussed in many circles. He was named the best director at the Indonesian Film Festival in 2005 (Brownies) and 2007 (Get Married).

Hanung's spectacular work at the beginning of his career was shown in the film Ayat-ayat Cinta (2008), which won 1.5 million viewers in its first 9 days. A religious film based on the novel by Habiburrahman El Shirazy with the same title and was successfully screened in Malaysia and Singapore. He was once called the director of religious films, although he prefers to be described as one who "struggles against ignorance and indifference". And he proves this through a series of productions he has worked on that spanned many segments and backgrounds: Historical Romance, Politics, Biography, Gender, Comedy, Horror, and Science Fiction.

For Hanung there were several films produced in Jogja which were very meaningful during his career as a director: Sang Pencerah (2010), Soekarno (2014), Sultan Agung (2018), Bumi Manusia (2019). These monumental films have had a tremendous impact on the world of cinema in Yogyakarta. After the production of the films Sang Pencerah and Soekarno, Jogja has become one of the reliable providers of 'film workers' resources at the national level. During the film production season, human resources from Jogja are in demand and in great demand to help produce national films as: Executive Producer, Astrada, Artistic, Acting Coach, Cameraman, Costume, Cast Director, etc. And the idea is also, the film production of Sultan Agung and Bumi Manusia has succeeded in presenting an Alam Studio in the Sleman Regency area. Studio Alam Gamplong has now become one of the most visited destinations by tourists, and drives the economy of the surrounding community.

Hanung studied at the Faculty of Economics at the Indonesian Islamic University in Yogyakarta, but did not complete it. Then moved to study the world of film at the Film Department, Faculty of Film and Television, Jakarta Art Institute.

Hanung Bramantyo has had a lot of influence on the development of film in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. In his productions, Hanung Bramantyo always involves Yogyakarta film workers and actors. There are many theater artists in Yogyakarta, making it even more comfortable to produce films in this city. The atmosphere of the city of Jogja is very inspiring for Hanung and the majority of his films are produced here. In addition, many young Jogja filmmakers were born from his hands, having previously been involved in film production with him. In the early days of his productions in Jogja, Hanung deliberately recruited young film lovers to do an internship for 6 months at his studio, working as crew assistants according to his chosen interests. These young Jogja filmmakers have even traveled the globe, participating in many world film festivals and winning international awards.

Hanung was very open to the presence of these young directors and was not stingy in sharing his knowledge. Until now, he still often provides opportunities for young people to be involved in the production of his films, as well as a learning space for them.

During this pandemic, he decided to move to Jogja with his family and continue to work productively. He has produced several feature films, FTV, web-series and short films, but he refuses to give up under this very difficult condition. One of his short films, titled At Home Alone, was made in his house with a crew and cast of family members, drivers and household assistants. He can never be stopped, not even by a pandemic.
