Bangunan nDalem Natan Kotagede

This building is named nDalem Natan which is an acronym for Dr. M. Nasir Tamara M.A., M.Sc., APU (hereinafter referred to as Mr. Nasir Tamara) and Mrs. Ita, husband and wife who own the ndalem building whose address is at Jalan Mondorakan number 5, Kota Gede, Yogyakarta. The nDalem Natan building was formerly known as the nDalem Proyodranan because this building belonged to Mr. Proyodrono, a jewelery businessman in Kotagede. Based on the short inscription written on the pendhapa lock, this building was completed in 1857. The nDalem Natan building was purchased by Mr. Nasir Tamara from the grandson of Mr. Proyodrono after being abandoned for a long time due to damage by the big earthquake on 26 May 2010.

According to records, Mr. Proyodrono is a resident of Kotagede, the Kalang group. The Kalang people are well-known as a group in Kotagede, as a result of their diligence in running trades in the fields of jewelry, batik, transportation, as well as pawnshops. Even though they were rich, they could not build houses in traditional Javanese style, such as those of sentanas or palace servants, as was the case with the social structure of that time. Therefore, they built houses with mixed architectural styles, including Javanese, European, Chinese, also using Middle Eastern decoration elements.

Although the Proyodranan ndalem was not collapsed by the 2010 big earthquake, the damage was quite severe. Furthermore, after being purchased by Mr. Nasir Tamara, this building was renovated for four years (2012-2016), by applying the principles of building restoration in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Thus making this ndalem one of the few houses of the Kalang people in Kotagede which are still well preserved.

The nDalem Natan building has a mixed Javanese and European architectural style, with Javanese, European, Chinese and Islamic ornaments. However, the layout uses the layout of the Javanese house. Thus there are Pendhapa, Pringgitan, Dalem, Senthong, Gandhok Kiwa, Gandhok Tengen, Gadri, Pawon, and Pekiwan. The pendhapa section is more like a wide terrace, the middle senthong is also equipped with patients like traditional Javanese houses.

Meanwhile, gandhok kiwa and gandhok tengen are used as private rooms for building owners and guest house rooms, and gadri as a dining room. The garage space then functioned as a café, and was renovated into a two-story building.

The floor still uses the old tiles but is polished, so it looks brighter. The pillars in the pendhapa are made of wood with carvings of floral and geometric motifs. Doors and windows use the fighting butterfly type.

Now, besides functioning as a residence, nDalem Natan also functions as a guesthouse. Besides that, there are also cafes, galleries, and artspaces. The new functions are arranged without losing the original parts and components. """
