In human life certainly goes through a cycle of life from birth in the world to death. In various cultures that grow in society, various kinds of expressions, values, philosophies, and meanings can be found in a life cycle tradition. Related to the life cycle traditions that grow in Yogyakarta, until now the style developed is the Ngayogyakarta Style. This was certainly inseparable from the Giyanti agreement which divided the territory of the Mataram Kingdom into two, namely the Surakarta Sunanate and the Yogyakarta Sultanate. In the field of culture, the Sultanate of Yogyakarta developed the Mataraman culture. In the course of time, the Yogyakarta Sultanate and Kasunanan styles or other styles in a life cycle are often mixed or applied simultaneously.
Over time, a young girl named Endang Sri Wahyuni, the child of the married couple R. Soekar Tjokrodiningrat and R. Ngt. Mrs. Marmin Sarjono and Mrs. Prajoko often invited Roestinah to or used her as a bridal make-up model (interview with Mrs. Patricia Wahyu Sulisasih Niken Dyah Sekar Piniji Sari, 7 September 2022). Dad, a bridal make-up model for Endang Sri Wahyuni, began to be interested in learning about the life cycle traditions and all their ubarampe and procedures and philosophies. Endang Sri Wahyuni, a woman born in Yogyakarta, August 25, 1940, initially taught herself about traditional clothing and life cycle ceremonies. Notes from the City Culture Office (Kundha Kakulturan) of the City of Yogyakarta, activities in terms of fashion and makeup as well as traditional life-cycle ceremonies have been carried out since 1973. In 1981 this interest was then continued by studying with Mrs. Donolobo and Mrs. Marmin Sarjono and Mrs. Prajoko to offering field. In the same year (1981) Endang Sri Wahyuni's mother, who was married to H.P. Soedjonoworo in 1959 was active in the Regional Association of Makeup and Clothing Experts (Hastanata). In addition, Mrs. Endang Sri Wahyuni, who is also known as Endang Soedjonoworo, began to work professionally as a make-up artist and Gagrak Ngayogyakarta traditional dress. At Hastanata Mrs. Endang Sri Wahyuni has served as secretary since 1988. The position of chairman has been held since 2014 and when she passed away May 26 2018.
Endang Sri Wahjuni, a woman born on August 25, 1940, likes to share knowledge, especially through the Hastanata organization. The spirit and consistency towards the preservation of life cycle traditions have never subsided even though they are old. Mrs. Endang is consistent in guarding the Ngayogjakarta traditional customs, especially in terms of life cycle ceremonies and their accessories. As a make-up artist, she does not want to comply with consumer requests if what is requested by consumers is out of the ordinary. As expressed by the child who followed in her mother's footsteps as a makeup artist.
"You don't want to take an order if it's wanted by the person who has the intention or even the bride but doesn't follow the standard, let alone to mix up the models, like the Solo and Yogya models. You don't want to. You will give input and explain to consumers in detail. If it is concerned If they don't want to receive input, they will be directed to look for other makeup artists. However, many of them then understand and accept input so that they use the Yogya model correctly." (information provided by Patricia Wahyu Sulisasih Niken Dyah Sekar Piniji Sari, September 7, 2022; almost the same information was given by Mr. Wigung Wratsangka telephone interview on September 1, 2022)
Because of her skills and knowledge about the life cycle ceremony, including all the equipment and make-up, Endang Sri Wahyuni's mother has many students. However, the course he once founded could not develop due to busyness in the organization and profession. Students who study are usually private and then can be independent as a make-up artist.
Belu actively shares his knowledge in the surrounding environment through the Rukun Warga (RW), Kalurahan, District organizations and of course through the Hastanata Organization. Besides being active in the traditional life cycle traditions, Iiabu Endang Sri Wahyuni also has a high commitment to other traditional customs such as the Angon Putu ceremony.
Her house is open for activities related to make-up and traditional clothing. So that the pendapa of the house in Cokrodiningratan JT. 11/146 RT 015/RW 004, Jetis, Yogyakarta, the house occupied by Mrs. Endang Sri Wahyuni is always busy with the activities of traditional dressmakers and make-up artists who are members of Hastanata. However, in her old age, Endang Sri Wahyuni's mother lived with one of her children at JIn. Raya Besole No. 9, Trihanggo, Gamping, Sleman Yogyakarta.***
